Choose Your Mood

Every day we make choices. Getting up in the morning is fraught with them: what to wear to work or school, what to eat for breakfast, and what to eat or make for lunch. Before you leave your front door and throughout your day, choices abound. Choices are a good thing. As long as you choose wisely, right?

One of the choices many people overlook is their mood. Choosing your mood sounds difficult. After all, we’ve all had those days when you wake up on the wrong side of the bed. But how you respond to negative stimuli is your choice.

These six practices can help you create and sustain a more positive mood.

  1. Practice gratitude: Even on our worst days, there is something to be grateful for. Gratitude reduces a multitude of negative emotions, ranging from envy and resentment to frustration and regret. Robert A. Emmons, Ph.D., a leading gratitude researcher, has conducted multiple studies on the link between gratitude and well-being. His research confirms that gratitude effectively increases happiness and reduces depression. So take a moment everyday to count your blessings.
  2. Smile: We call this the “fake it ‘til you make it” tip. Studies show that making an emotion-filled face can trick the brain into thinking it feels what we are expressing. When you put on a happy face, you may be able to experience happiness. Try it. You have nothing to lose.
  3. Exercise: We’ve all heard of runner’s high, right? That euphoric feeling brought on by the release of endorphins. You don’t have to run to get the same results. Research indicates that just 20 minutes of exercise a day is all it takes to help boost your mood.
  4. Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness is a state of active, open attention on the present when you observe your thoughts and feelings from a distance, without judgment. A 2013 study from the University of Utah found individuals who describe themselves as being more mindful have more stable emotions and perceive themselves to have better control over their mood and behavior throughout the day.
  5. Choose empathy: Everyone wants to be treated kindly. When we employ empathy, we treat others with the same respect that we would like given to us.   6. Nourish your body: According to WebMD, dietary changes can bring about changes in our brain structure (chemically and physiologically), which can lead to altered behavior.
